Geomembranes

The term "geomembranes" refers to constructions whereby large areas are covered or soil layers are separated by means of plastic sheeting in PE-HD or PVC-P.
Applications for this technology include:
  • sealing below landfill sites, in order to prevent escaping percolate entering the ground water;
  • sealing above landfill sites, to prevent escaping gases entering the atmosphere and to prevent rainwater penetrating the tipped waste;
  • ground water barriers, for example during construction of the entrance to a tunnel.

Inspection

QSI are accredited to carry out inspections of geomembrane constructions, based inter alia on the relevant standards in the "Protocols for the Application of Plastic Geomembranes used for Soil Protection".
This increasingly means that QSI not only carry out the inspection of the eventual geomembrane construction but are also in attendance during the construction work itself. In that event the items inspected may include:
  • the substrate;
  • the materials used;
  • the laying of the membrane strips;
  • the jointing method employed;
  • the weld parameters applied;
  • the execution of the jointing work;
  • the execution of any repairs and penetrations;
  • the application of the covering layer.
The inspection findings will be set out in a report for the client, accompanied by a declaration of conformity if applicable.
